The trade deadline is looming large and is just over a month away. Teams are still trying to figure out whether they'll be sellers or buyers, as there’s a lot of baseball left between now and July 31st. In this article, I’ll discuss potential third baseman targets and who I think could be realistic trade options. I’ll also throw in a trade that would never happen—but I dream about it anyway.
Yankees Need a Third Baseman
The biggest hole the Yankees currently have is at third base. Jazz has been solid at the hot corner, but he’s naturally a second baseman and grades out better defensively on the right side. The Yankees have been linked to a few names for most of the season now, and I’ll start with the biggest.
Nolan Arenado has been on the trading block since spring training, as the Cardinals have approached a rebuild. However, they may be pivoting to a softer rebuild—similar to what the Detroit Tigers did last year—which means Arenado could still be moved. He started the year hot but has regressed significantly, and it seems like Father Time may be catching up with the future Hall of Famer. He currently has a slash line of .245/.306/.393, giving him a subpar OPS of .698. While the bat has slowed down, he remains a defensive gem, ranking fourth in the National League in DRS among third basemen. Personally, I’m not a fan of this trade happening. He’s still owed a lot of money, is on the wrong side of 30, and likely wouldn’t hit well in Yankee Stadium.
Next is Eugenio Suárez. Similar to St. Louis, the Diamondbacks aren’t out of the playoff hunt and have a talented roster. But if they decide to be sellers, they could move several players for strong returns—Suárez among them. He’s currently slashing .253/.323/.565 with a very solid OPS of .888. Defensively, he’s not as strong—his DRS is at -4—but he makes up for it with his bat. My only concern with this trade is that the Yankees would be adding another home-run-or-bust hitter. His on-base percentage is average, and I also worry about the trade package needed to acquire him. The Yankees rank on the lower side of farm system rankings this year. At the same time, they’re in win-now mode with Judge turning 34 this year, so I do love the idea of trading for Suárez.
My Unrealistic Dream Trade
This one is very unrealistic, mainly because the player has a large contract, is turning 31 at the end of the season, and has had past conflicts with players. My dream trade? Carlos Correa.
I love the idea of New York bringing in his energy and postseason experience. He started the year off sluggish, but the entire Twins team got off to a rough start. Since then, Correa has turned it around. You know he’d be a defensive rock—especially if he moves to the less taxing position of third base from shortstop. I think fans would welcome him to the team with open arms, but I’m not sure how he’d mesh in the clubhouse. He and Cody Bellinger have had a public feud stemming from the Astros' cheating scandal.
Other Names to Watch
Other names have also been floated for the Yankees. IKF from the Pirates has been linked to a potential return to New York. Ryan McMahon always seems to pop up in Yankees rumors each year. Yoán Moncada was mentioned early on but has struggled as of late. Recently, there have even been rumors about a Ke'Bryan Hayes trade.
