Yankees Week in Review: April 27–May 3, 2025

The New York Yankees concluded the week with a 4–3 record, highlighted by a dominant doubleheader sweep over the Toronto Blue Jays, but marred by a series loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Their momentum toward a bounce-back series win was ultimately halted in a narrow 3–2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

Rays Series: A Close Call (May 2–3)

In the series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees secured a 3–0 victory, with standout performances from key players. However, in the second game, they fell 3–2, as a late-game rally by the Rays proved decisive.

Manager Aaron Boone had both Luke Weaver and Devin Williams available but opted to go with the streaky Mark Leiter Jr., who surrendered two crucial runs.

Notably, shortstop Anthony Volpe experienced a shoulder issue during the game, raising concerns about his health moving forward.

Anthony Volpe Injury, who will step up for the Yankees

Volpe went down late in Saturday’s game while diving to his right and reported hearing a “pop” in his left shoulder. Though he remained in the game, he is out of the lineup for Sunday and has been listed as day-to-day.

The question now is: Who will step up in his absence?

Currently, Jazz Chisholm Jr. is on the injured list after suffering an oblique injury during the Baltimore series. The Yankees were already short on infielders, and with the possibility of Volpe missing time, depth will be seriously tested.

Final Thoughts

The injuries to Jazz and Volpe have hindered the Yankees’ infield, and the team will need bench players to step up quickly.

Aaron Judge has continued his MVP-caliber campaign, maintaining a league-leading OPS and batting average. The Yankees will continue to rely heavily on Judge as they head into a challenging week, with a three-game series against the San Diego Padres, followed by three games against the Athletics.
